How Do You Visit Hida-Furukawa on Foot, by Bicycle or by Car?
This guide is for visitors who plan a day in Hida-Furukawa, the castle-town district of Hida City in northern Gifu Prefecture, and who want the practical facts first. It covers how long a walk takes, the two information centers, lockers, bicycle rental and parking.
We used the official tourism site of Hida City and the city's own road information page. These pages are in Japanese, and we translated the facts ourselves. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. We name no hotels or restaurants.
A small town you can walk
The city's FAQ says Hida-Furukawa is a small town that you can see on foot. It lists eight places to see and says the walk takes about two and a half hours in total. They are the Setogawa canal and the white-walled storehouses, the Ichinomachi streets, a handmade candle shop, the Honkoji and Shinshuji temples, the Sannomachi streets, the Hida Takumi Bunkakan museum and the Hida-Furukawa Matsuri Kaikan.
The tourism site's guide to the standard sights says the Setogawa canal is a five-minute walk from Hida-Furukawa Station. It also lists the Matsuri Kaikan, a herb workshop called Hida Mori no Megumi, three large temples and two sake breweries. It says the area suits a day trip from Hida-Takayama. Our guides to the canal and the festivals go further.
Information centers and luggage
The FAQ says there are two tourist information centers. The first is the Hida-Furukawa Machinaka tourist information center in Ichinomachi. The second is the Hida City tourist information center beside the station.
The FAQ says the Machinaka center holds hand luggage for free from 09:00 to 16:00. It says coin lockers are at the center beside the station and gives these daily prices.
- Small, 30 cm high, 5 lockers: 400 yen.
- Medium, 55 cm high, 3 lockers: 500 yen.
- Large, 84 cm high, 2 lockers: 600 yen.
- Extra large, 100 cm high, 3 lockers: 700 yen.
The FAQ also says paid guides are available for Hida-Furukawa and for the neighboring Kamioka, arranged through the city tourism association. We did not read their rates, so ask the association.
Bicycles
The FAQ says bicycles can be rented at the Hida-Furukawa Matsuri Kaikan. It states 1,000 yen for a day, 300 yen for an hour and 2,000 yen for two days. Hours are 09:00 to 16:00 with the last rental at 15:00. It says there are four domestic cross bikes, and that children's bicycles and city bicycles are also available. Availability may change, so call or ask at the Matsuri Kaikan.
By car and parking
The city's parking page names two lots for visitors who walk the old town. The first is the free lot at Hida City Hall, which also serves the city library. The page calls it convenient for the walk, and says a gazebo there has walking maps. The Matsuri Kaikan is directly across, so it suggests starting there.
The second is the large lot on the east side of the station. The Setogawa page also mentions a free lot behind the station. The FAQ says the lot behind the station has a toilet with a baby-changing bed and chair. We did not read a rule on overnight parking.
For drivers, the city's road information page lists closures. When we read it, it showed a closure of National Route 360 at the Amo Pass, updated on 2026-09-25, and a note on forest road conditions updated on 2026-09-18. Road conditions change, so check the page, the Gifu road information site and the NEXCO page that the tourism site links.
Trains and buses
The Matsuri Kaikan page says the Matsuri Kaikan is a five-minute walk from Hida-Furukawa Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. The tourism site's transport page links to the JR Central status pages for the Takayama Line, for ordinary trains and for the Limited Express Hida. It also links the Nohi Bus status page. We did not read train times or fares, so look at those pages for your date.
